To Mac or not to Mac, that's the question

Wed Oct 28, 2009, 12:44 AM
I have thought it over and over, again and again,
and come to a conclusion. I want a Mac.

You may wonder why I'd want one, because surely a Windows-based machine can preform just as well?

There are some things I would like to point out:

• A Mac looks good
I know, I know, this sounds like a pointless point, but I believe that it is relaxing if the macihne is aesthetically pleasing.
You end up having your focus on the work you're doing, and not on the squirky lid, the crazy hot touchpad or the screws that keep falling out.
At the same time you get the proper sturdy feeling when you're working on a Mac, something I've missed with PCs for years.

• A Mac rarely crashes
But that does not mean a Mac never crahses or hangs. The fact that I don't have to fear a sudden BSOD, strange system-errors and such alike. I've been a PC-user all my life and I know how frustrating it can be when your system halts while you're working on something important. The safety a Mac gives is something I know will give more focus on the actual work being done on the machine, rather than on the machine itself.

• Macs are industry-standard
Or at least they used to be. I heard that it's now about 50-50 with design-companies and the use of Mac vs PC. Even though this is the case, Apple were still the first ones who presented the term "Desktop Publishing" back in 1985, and Photoshop was still originally created for the Mac.

So there are definetly a lot of good things to say about Apple's Mac, but there's never light without darkness.
When I think of it, there is maninly one negative thing about Mac-machines - the price:

• Macs are expensive
This is something important. Being a student I don't have the world's best income, and when Apple offers Macbooks that start at around $2 650 (in Norway), it's obvious that I'd rather go for something cheaper and more powerful. Because I can usually get other laptop-models that are a lot more powerful than a Mac, and still save money.
Now, if Apple had done their job better and offered either a better price or a proper financial-solution for the Mac, I'd definetly go for one.

I'm no gamer. I've never been one and I don't think I'll ever be. Therefore, the fact that you can't really play many games on the Mac doesn't bother me much. I'm a design-student, I don't have the need of playing games. That's something I leave my Xbox to do.

The only thing remaining for me now is actually getting the machine, something I hope will happen before the end of the year.

At the very end I would like to invite you to share your experiences. Own a Mac and have pros and cons? Switched from a PC to Mac and never looked back? Is the Mac really worth the money? You are very welcome to tell.

Howdy y'all!
Until next friday I am staying in The Netherlands, at a good friend of mine's place.

For anyone who's interested, you can now follow me on Twitter. Considering that it's 2009, I guess it's about time I get over there.

I suppose I could go on and on about how things are in general, my study, my work and so on, but I'll just leave it there.

Life is fortunately still close to perfect, and I am still having a great time living it all. :)

So here I am, over a month since last entry.
So. Much. Has. Happened.

I've travelled, I've gotten into the school I wanted, I've moved away, I've started living life the way it's supposed to, I'm planning on getting a Mac, I've hung from hooks, I've now got super fast fiber, I've bought a membership on tutplus and I've got my own coffee-machine.

Life cannot really get much better than what it is now. I can finally drink the water the tap-water and I'm having a visitor from The Netherlands this December.

I am happy and life is perfect!

Ahoy deviants!

To give a brief update on how things will work here in the future;

I am most likely moving away this autumn to start my college-degree in visual communication. Hurray!
Having taken this to consideration, together with the fact that I practically never update either my journal or add new deviations from time to time, I have decided to try to clean up my account.

This includes deleting old post in the journal and my elder deviations that I no longer fit my expression as an artist, changing avatar, getting a proper deviantID and adding some information and such. I guess you get the idea.
Old deviations that I still think are worth keeping will be sorted in own categories in my gallery.

I want to take the entire "submitting deviations, writing a journal and being a more active deviant"-thing a bit more seriously from now on.

At the same time I hope that this will be a great way for me to present things I create during the three years the coming degree stretches over. (If I get the degree and the place at the college, that is!)

That's it for now. Wish me luck! :)

Take care! :peace:

Oh happy day!

So even though school has started, there's still light at the end of the tunnel.
I've bought a new computer. W00T!

In other words: Photoshop isn't longer something that makes my memory shake in its underpants. :D
